The Monterey Jazz Festival is the one the whole music world keeps an eye on. Now in its 69th year, it takes over the Monterey Fairgrounds for a September weekend of headliners and discoveries across multiple stages, one of the longest continuously running jazz festivals anywhere.
The scale is the point. A main-arena bill of marquee names runs alongside grounds stages where the next generation and the deep cuts play to smaller crowds, and part of the tradition is wandering between them, catching a legend on one stage and an unknown who stops you cold on the next. The festival has been a proving ground and a homecoming for jazz musicians since 1958.
Arena seats and grounds passes are separate tickets, and the marquee nights sell through, so planning ahead pays. The fairgrounds sit a short drive from downtown, evenings run cool, and the grounds food and vendors are part of the experience.
Day passes are the value play if you would rather graze the grounds stages than commit to an arena seat, and the discoveries out there are often the sets people talk about afterward.
