The Corkscrew still does what it has always done. It drops away under you, and for a few seconds the cars that made racing history hang on the edge of it, sideways and driven hard by people who paid a great deal of money for the privilege of not babying them.
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion runs August 12 to 15 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and it is the closest thing Car Week has to a soul. While the rest of the Peninsula fills up with concours lawns and auction tents, this is where the metal gets used. Pre-war grand prix cars, Trans-Am muscle, Can-Am monsters, Group C prototypes, all of it sorted into run groups and sent out to race rather than parade.
Practice and qualifying build through the week. The feature races land Saturday, and the field runs again Sunday morning before everyone points toward Pebble Beach. General admission gets you the paddock, which is the real reason to come. There are no ropes keeping you off the cars and no glass between you and a mechanic with a wrench and a deadline. You can stand close enough to hear a V12 warm up and smell what it burns.
Bring sun cover and shoes you can walk in. The paddock sprawls, the hills are steep, and the best viewing (the top of the Corkscrew, the exit of Turn 6) takes a hike to reach. Gates open early, so come early.
