Everything else during Car Week is a competition for size and money. The Little Car Show is the opposite, and that is exactly why locals love it. On Wednesday, August 11, Pacific Grove closes Lighthouse Avenue and hands it to cars with engines under 1,601cc, nothing newer than a set cutoff, and a sense of humor about the whole thing.
Think microcars, early Minis, air-cooled Volkswagens, Fiats you could pick up and move, and the occasional oddity that only exists because someone loved it enough to keep it running. It is free, it is walkable, and it fills the middle of the week when the big-money events are still gathering steam.
Pacific Grove does this kind of morning better than anyone, and the show fits the town. Coffee on Lighthouse, a slow walk down the blocks, owners happy to lift a tiny hood and explain what you are looking at. Bring the kids. The scale of the cars does half the work.
Parking around downtown PG tightens early, so walk in if you can. The show runs the late morning into the early afternoon before the street reopens.
