The Monterey Peninsula is one of the more dog-friendly corners of California, and locals treat their dogs like family, which means beaches, trails, patios, and shops built to welcome them. If you are traveling with a dog or just want the best places to take yours, here is the lay of the land.
Carmel is the headliner. It bills itself as one of the most dog-friendly towns in the country, and it earns it: Carmel Beach lets dogs run off-leash on the sand, and many of the shops, galleries, and restaurant patios keep water bowls by the door. Del Monte Beach and the recreation trail in Monterey are the everyday dog walks, flat and scenic, and Carmel Valley opens up for longer trail runs when the coast is cold.
A few rules keep it easy. Point Lobos and the Aquarium do not allow dogs, so plan those for a dog-free day, and leash laws apply on most beaches outside Carmel’s off-leash stretch. Bring water and bags, since the coast is warmer and drier than it looks, and check patio policies before you sit down.
