The draw starts with the produce, Salinas Valley growers bringing the harvest direct, and widens into hot food, baked goods, flowers, crafts, and live music down the blocks. The Baker’s Alley section leans into ready-to-eat, which makes the market a low-effort dinner as easily as a grocery stop. More than anything it functions as downtown’s weekly social hour, the evening the street feels most alive.
Bring a tote and some cash, and pace yourself on the food stands. Parking downtown fills as soon as the barricades go up, so the smart move is to walk in from the surrounding neighborhoods. The market runs through the evening in most weather.
Late July brings peak summer produce, so the stone fruit and tomatoes are at their best right about now, which makes the end-of-month markets some of the fullest of the year.
