The Monterey County Fair returns September 3 to 7 at the Monterey Fairgrounds, with rides, livestock, music, and the end-of-summer crowd.

The Monterey County Fair returns to its Fairgrounds home September 3 to 7, five days of livestock, carnival, and the end-of-summer ritual the Peninsula has kept for generations. It is the kind of event that looks the same year to year on purpose, and that is the point.

The fair leans on the things a good county fair always has: 4-H and FFA livestock shows where local kids walk animals they have raised, a midway of rides and games after dark, competitive exhibits from baking to photography, and food that only tastes right on fairgrounds. Live music and grandstand entertainment fill the evenings.

The grounds off Fairground Road in Monterey are the same ones that host the Monterey Jazz Festival a few weeks later, a reminder of how much the fairgrounds carry for the Peninsula’s late-summer calendar. Parking fills early on the weekend, and the Labor Day timing makes the holiday Monday one of the busier days.

Tickets, hours, and the daily entertainment schedule post at the fair’s site as the dates approach. Bring cash for the midway, go hungry, and give yourself more time than you think you need.
