On the first Friday of the month, downtown Pacific Grove stays open late and turns the evening into an art walk. Galleries, shops, and studios along Lighthouse Avenue open their doors, pour a little wine, and hang new work, and the whole thing is free to wander.

It is a low-key ritual, more neighborhood stroll than event, which is exactly the appeal. You drift from one lit-up storefront to the next, run into people you know, and see the town’s creative side without a ticket or a plan. Local artists are often on hand with their work, and the shops lean into it with demonstrations and small receptions.

Park once and walk, since the fun is in the wandering and downtown PG is compact. Evenings on the point run cool even in summer, so bring a layer, and give yourself time to duck into the spots you usually walk past.

Cap the night with dinner on Lighthouse and you have a full evening out for the cost of a meal, which is part of why locals keep the date on the calendar.

First Friday dates and any special editions post to our events calendar, and our Arts coverage follows the Peninsula gallery scene. For the current downtown lineup, See Monterey keeps a listing.
