Growers from the Salinas Valley anchor the produce section with the week’s harvest, often picked that morning and priced better than any grocery store. Around them, the street fills with prepared food, flowers, crafts, and music, and the Baker’s Alley end turns the market into a dinner plan as much as a shopping run. Regulars have their favorite stands and their loop, and half the point is running into people you know.
Come with cash and a bag, and leave room to graze. Downtown parking gets tight the moment the street closes, so arrive early or park a few blocks out and walk in. The market holds through the afternoon into the evening, weather regardless.
Midsummer is when the stalls are deepest, with the valley harvest in full swing, so a mid-July visit rewards the shopper who comes with a plan and an empty bag.
