Cars that will be judged to the millimeter on Sunday, some of them nearly a century old and worth more than a house, get fired up and run a real drive along the coast. If a car ties in its class at the Concours, completing the Tour breaks the tie, so there is a genuine reason these priceless machines are out moving instead of sitting.
For spectators, the move is to pick a spot along the route, Carmel, the coast road, or the Highway 1 stretch, and watch history roll by. It is the most democratic event of the week, no ticket, no lawn, just a good vantage point and some patience.
