For a small region, the Peninsula keeps a steady run of live theater going, from community stages to touring shows in the bigger downtown houses. On any given month there is usually something on, and the range is wider than a place this size has any right to.
Monterey and Pacific Grove carry the community-theater tradition, with local companies staging seasons that lean on volunteers and regulars who have been at it for years. Carmel brings the polished end, where the larger stages host touring productions, concerts, and the occasional name you would not expect to find this far from a city. The mix means you can catch an ambitious small production one weekend and a full touring show the next.
Tickets for the community houses stay reasonable, and the rooms are small enough that there is no bad seat. The bigger venues sell out faster, so the popular runs are worth booking ahead rather than deciding day-of.
Student and university productions add another layer, with CSUMB and the local schools staging work that is often more adventurous than the ticket price suggests.
