Not all of the Peninsula art lives behind gallery glass. Walk the downtowns and the waterfront and you will find it out in the open, on walls, in plazas, and along the trail.
Monterey and Seaside have leaned into murals and public installations over the last few years, and Cannery Row wears its own history in bronze and signage that nods to Steinbeck and the sardine era. Keep your eyes up on Alvarado Street and you will catch pieces that were not there a season ago, since new commissions go in and older walls get reworked. It is the kind of detail you notice more the longer you live here, and it rewards the slow walk over the quick errand.
The best way to see it is on foot. Park once downtown, follow the Recreation Trail toward the water, and let the route wander through the plazas rather than straight down the main drag. Seaside and Marina have their own stretches worth a separate afternoon, and the styles shift town to town.
