The Peninsula is one of the great golf addresses on earth, and you do not have to be a member of anything to feel it. Pebble Beach alone puts this stretch of coast on every serious player’s list, and the courses around it turn a weekend into a pilgrimage.
The famous names carry famous price tags, and Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and the rest are bucket-list rounds priced to match. But the region also keeps more approachable options, municipal and resort courses where regular players get their rounds in without a second mortgage. Pacific Grove’s muni, in particular, has long been the locals’ answer to a coastal round.
Tee times at the marquee courses book far ahead, especially around the tournament and Car Week weeks when the whole Peninsula fills. The weather is a factor too, since coastal fog can sit on a morning round before it burns off by midday.
Even if you never tee off, the courses are worth a look during the big tournaments, when public access and grandstands put the coast on display.
