Moving to the Peninsula comes with a short learning curve, and most of it is pleasant. The weather, the rhythm, and the geography all run a little differently than newcomers expect, and a few early lessons save a lot of confusion.
Start with the fog. Summer mornings are often grey and cool, the marine layer sitting on the coast until it burns off by afternoon, and the inland towns can be sunny while Pacific Grove is socked in. Dress in layers year round. Learn the towns next, since Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Seaside, and Marina each have their own feel and their own reasons to visit.
Get a feel for the calendar too. Car Week in August and the big golf and jazz weekends transform the Peninsula, fill the roads, and spike the prices, so locals plan around them. Beyond those peaks, the pace is unhurried and the outdoors are the main event.
Give it a season and the rhythm sets in, the fog stops bothering you, and you start planning your week around the light instead of the clock.
