From easy coast walks to Carmel Valley ridgelines. Where to hike on the Peninsula, and what each trail is good for.

You do not have to drive far to find a good hike on the Peninsula. The coast, the valley, and the hills behind them offer everything from a flat stroll with an otter view to a lung-burning ridgeline, often within twenty minutes of downtown.

Point Lobos is the crown jewel, a state reserve just south of Carmel where the trails hug coves full of sea lions and cypress. It gets busy and often fills, so go early. For a workout, Garland Ranch in Carmel Valley climbs out of the oaks to views back over the whole valley. Jacks Peak, up above Monterey, gives you a shaded ridge and a quiet alternative when the coast is packed.

For the easy win, the Monterey Bay recreation trail runs flat and paved along the water from Monterey through Pacific Grove, more a long walk than a hike but hard to beat for the scenery-to-effort ratio.

Bring layers and water, wear real shoes for the coastal trails, and check whether your trailhead charges for parking or fills early. See what is happening outdoors on our events calendar, and our beaches guide pairs well with a coast walk. For maps and hours, California State Parks has the details.
