Carmel-by-the-Sea has more galleries per block than almost anywhere its size, and walking them is free. The town was built by artists a century ago, and that DNA never left, so a slow loop through the side streets turns up everything from plein-air landscapes to photography to sculpture.
The concentration is the point. You can step from a room hung with local coastal painters into one showing national names without crossing a street, and most of the galleries are happy to let you wander whether or not you are buying. The staff know the work and the artists, and a good conversation is part of what you came for.
Go on a weekday morning if you can, when the streets are quiet and the light is good, and give yourself time to double back. Carmel rewards the second look, and the galleries rotate their shows often enough that a return trip a month later is a different walk.
Many of the rooms host the artists themselves on opening weekends, so timing a visit to a new show can mean meeting the person who made the work on the wall.
