Car Week is a photographer’s week, whether you are shooting a phone or a full kit. The cars are extraordinary, the coastal light is famous, and a few spots deliver frames you cannot get anywhere else. Here is where to point the camera.
The Corkscrew at Laguna Seca is the icon. Hike up to the top of the drop during the Motorsports Reunion and you get race cars pitching downhill through one of the most famous corners in the world. Morning light and a long lens do the rest.
Pebble Beach at dawn is the other essential. The Concours Dawn Patrol, when the cars roll onto the 18th fairway in the fog before the crowds arrive, is the shot the whole car world chases, and the early hour keeps the background clean. It is worth the alarm.
For cars in motion, the coast is your studio. The Tour d’Elegance on Wednesday sends priceless machinery along 17-Mile Drive and Highway 1, so a coastal turnout gives you a moving classic against the Pacific. Ocean Avenue in Carmel frames cars against the storefronts and the tree-lined street, and Cannery Row catches them with the water behind.
A few basics. Golden hour, early and late, beats harsh midday sun on chrome and paint. Get low for drama and shoot the details, a badge, a gauge, a reflection, not just the whole car. And mind the ropes and the owners, since a little courtesy gets you closer than any press pass.
