The lawns and the grandstands cost money. The roads are free, and during Car Week the roads are where a lot of the magic actually happens, because these cars do not trailer everywhere. They drive. If you know where to stand, you can watch a century of automotive history roll past without spending a dollar.
The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance on Wednesday is the big one. The Concours entrants run a route through 17-Mile Drive and down the coast, so any spot along the way puts priceless machinery a few feet from your face. The Tour is the single best free viewing of the week.
Ocean Avenue in Carmel is a natural pull-off point, since cars stage and pass through all week and the town is built for walking. Carmel Valley Road funnels everything headed to the Quail and the valley wineries, so a coffee at a Valley cafe on Friday morning is a front-row seat to the exotic parade.
For drama, chase elevation. Laureles Grade and the back roads over the hills give you cars working through corners rather than idling in traffic, and the Highway 1 stretch south toward Big Sur turns any turnout into a coastal backdrop that no amount of money can buy. Just mind the traffic and pull off safely.
Downtown Monterey and Cannery Row catch the flow between events, especially early and late in the day, and the free Monterey trolley loop is a moving vantage point of its own. The trick everywhere is timing: mornings before the crowds and the fog lifts, or late afternoon as cars head back from the day’s events.
