Car Week has a reputation for champagne and seven-figure price tags, and a lot of it earns that. But a good chunk of the ten days is free, relaxed, and genuinely fun for kids, if you skip the exclusive lawns and aim for the street shows.
Start with the Little Car Show in Pacific Grove. Tiny cars, a walkable closed street, and owners happy to pop a hood the size of a suitcase make it the most kid-friendly hour of the week. The scale of the cars does half the entertaining on its own.
Then there is Concours d’LeMons in Seaside, which celebrates the worst and weirdest cars ever built. It is free, it is silly, and kids get the joke immediately. The downtown shows, Concours on the Avenue in Carmel and the Pacific Grove Rotary Auto Rally, are stroller-friendly, open-air, and cost nothing.
The sleeper pick is the Tour d’Elegance on Wednesday. Pick a spot along the coast road and watch a hundred years of cars drive past. Kids love the parade of it, and you can pack a picnic and make a morning of it.
A few practical notes. Bring ear protection for the little ones, since race cars and revving exotics are louder than they look, and pack sun cover and water because the lawns and streets run hot by midday. Snacks head off meltdowns, and a mid-afternoon break beats pushing through nap time.
