The Peninsula punches well above its size for live music and theater, and most of it happens in a handful of rooms worth knowing by name.
The Golden State Theatre on Alvarado Street in Monterey is the grand one, a restored 1920s movie palace with the ornate interior to match, now hosting touring music, comedy, and film. The Sunset Center in Carmel is the Peninsula’s marquee performing-arts hall, home to chamber series, dance, and larger touring acts in a room built for sound. And the Osio, in downtown Monterey, has long been the independent film and small-room heart of the city, the place to catch the movie that will not play at the multiplex.
Beyond the anchors, the calendar fills in around them: outdoor concerts at Custom House Plaza, festival programming that spills across the fairgrounds, and the club and restaurant stages that carry the nights in between. A given week on the Peninsula holds more than a place this size has any right to.
