For everyone who lives here, Car Week is a choice. You can spend ten days cursing the traffic and hiding indoors, or you can treat it as the strangest, best week the Peninsula throws all year. The locals who enjoy it have simply learned how to play it.
Lean into the free stuff. While visitors pay hundreds to stand on a lawn, you can walk Concours on the Avenue, catch the Little Car Show, and watch the Tour d’Elegance roll past the coast, all for nothing. The best of Car Week was never behind the ticket booth.
Respect the traffic, then route around it. The Peninsula gridlocks midday and after events let out, so run your errands early, take the back roads over the hills instead of the coast highway, and accept that Highway 1 and 17-Mile Drive are a lost cause from late morning on. If you have to be somewhere, leave absurdly early.
Know when to stay home. Sunday, with the Pebble Beach Concours, and the Quail on Friday are peak chaos. If you are not going, those are days to work from home, hit the trails inland, or enjoy a suddenly empty local beach while everyone else sits in traffic.
And support the town. The restaurants, shops, and small events lean on this week, so if you can tolerate the crowds, a dinner in Pacific Grove or a stop at a downtown show puts your money where you live. Our guide to getting around the Peninsula covers the traffic basics.
Ten days from now it is over and the Peninsula exhales. Play it right and you will be a little sad to see it go. See the full slate on the Car Week hub, and for the wider view, See Monterey keeps the regional listing.
