On Wednesday morning, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance sends the Concours cars, the same machines that will be judged to the millimeter on Sunday, out for a real drive along the coast, and anyone standing by the road gets to watch a century of automotive history roll past for free.
The Tour runs a loop out of Pebble Beach through 17-Mile Drive, down Highway 1, and back, typically starting early and wrapping around midday. The cars are spaced out and moving, so you want a spot with a clear sightline and a little room to linger.
Ocean Avenue in Carmel is the classic choice. The Tour passes through, the town is built for walking, and you can post up at a cafe and watch between sips. For coast drama, the Highway 1 turnouts south of Carmel put the cars against the Pacific, the kind of backdrop no grandstand can sell you. Carmel Valley Road catches the cars headed inland, and the 17-Mile Drive gate area sees them early before the crowds thicken.
A few practical notes. Go early, the good roadside spots fill and the coast fog can sit until midday. Bring a chair and a coffee, since the cars come in waves and the wait is part of it. Pull off the road fully and mind the traffic, because everyone else has the same idea. If you only catch one thing free all week, make it this.
